Valve Stem Replacement: Step by Step

Valve stem replacement requires removing the tire from the rim in most cases. Here is how a professional tire shop handles it — and what to expect if you attempt it yourself:

Step 1 — Deflate & Dismount

Remove the valve core to fully deflate the tire, then break the bead seal and dismount the tire from the rim using a tire machine. This gives full access to the valve stem hole from the inside.

Step 2 — Remove Old Stem & Install New

Cut or pull the old valve stem out from the outside. Clean the rim hole, then lubricate and pull the new valve stem through from the inside using a valve stem installation tool. For metal stems, tighten the hex nut to the specified torque.

Step 3 — Remount, Inflate & Check

Remount the tire onto the rim, inflate to the recommended pressure (found on the driver’s door placard), and spray soapy water around the new valve stem to confirm there are no bubbles — meaning zero leaks. Install a new valve core and tire valve cap.

Tire Valve Caps: Small Part, Big Role

Tire valve caps (also called valve stem caps) screw onto the top of the valve stem and serve as a secondary seal against air loss and a primary barrier against dirt, moisture, and road debris. Without a cap, grit can enter the valve core and cause a slow leak — or moisture can freeze inside the core in cold climates, jamming it open.

Plastic caps are standard and work fine for everyday driving. Metal valve stem caps look better and last longer but can corrode onto the stem if made from a different metal (galvanic corrosion). If you choose metal tire caps, pick ones made from the same material as your valve stem or use caps with a built-in rubber O-ring seal to prevent bonding.
