The fast way to make a screwdriver magnetic

When you are fitting cabinet hardware or reaching into a recessed appliance panel, a tiny screw falling off the driver is more than annoying. A quick pass with a strong permanent magnet can give many steel screwdriver shafts enough pull to hold a small steel screw at the tip.

This works because the magnet encourages magnetic domains in suitable ferromagnetic steel to line up. You do not need a complicated setup: a clean screwdriver, a decent permanent magnet, and steady repeated strokes are usually enough for an everyday DIY job.

Stroke smoothly toward the tip

Draw the magnet along the shaft toward the tip 20 to 30 times. Use steady contact and one direction each time. At the tip, lift the magnet away before returning to the starting position.

Touch the screwdriver tip to a small steel screw. If it holds securely enough for your job, you are done. If the pull is weak, make another 10 to 20 one-way strokes with the same magnet.
